E-books at NYSID: How to Cite E-Books

Formatting a Citation

While many of the e-book collections provide completed citations, there are occasions where you may need to create your own citation.

NYSID instructors use the MLA (Modern Languages Association) format to record their sources. If formatting a citation yourself, make sure to keep the following information:

  • Author and/or editor names (if available)
  • Article name in quotation marks (if applicable)
  • Title of the Website, project, or book in italics. (Remember that some Print publications have Web publications with slightly different names. They may, for example, include additional information or otherwise modified information, like domain names [e.g. .com or .net])
  • Any version numbers available, including revisions, posting dates, volumes, or issue numbers
  • Publisher information, including the publisher name and publishing date
  • Take note of any page numbers (if available)
  • Medium of publication
  • Date you accessed the material
  • URL (if required, or for your own personal reference; MLA does not require a URL)

The information above was gathered from The Purdue Owl. The Owl has much more documentation on how to work with citations. In addition, you can head over to NYSID Library's MLA Citation Guide for more tips on how to properly cite your sources.

NYSID Writing Center

NYSID's Writing Center offers virtual one-on-one appointments for citation assistance. To book an appointment, go to the Students tab in the Portal and click Writing Center Scheduling on the lefthand side.
