Friends of the Library

Alumni and other designers as well as aficionados of interior design are welcome to join the Friends of NYSID Library (a designation option on the donation page). Friends’ donations, together with in-kind contributions of books, photographs, materials, and archives, strengthen the NYSID Library and Archives and the resources and services they offer students, faculty, other designers, and researchers.

NYSID Library Policy Regarding Gifts in Kind

The NYSID Library welcomes gifts of books, periodicals, auction catalogs, architectural materials, archives, photographs, and works of art. We are most grateful if donors are able to cover the costs of delivering gifts to the Library and to make a contribution toward processing and cataloging gifted books and materials.

Before making a donation, prospective donors should consult the Library’s Book Donation Policy or Materials Collection Guidelines and contact a librarian at 212-452-4169 or libraryinfo(at)nysid.edu to provide a list of the items offered. The Library makes every effort to keep all gift materials, but it reserves the right not to accession individual items that either duplicate or are determined to be less relevant to the collection. Such items may be offered to students or to other libraries for their collection, or they may be sold. Proceeds of the sale of such materials will be used to benefit the collection. In the case of large collections, books will be integrated into existing classifications rather than kept together as a group.

The Library provides a letter of receipt acknowledging the size of the donation, but does not estimate the value of the book(s) and materials. For help with valuation, the donor may wish to consult the Appraisers Association of America or the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America for a list of appraisers/book dealers who can establish the value of the gift.

Book Donation Policy

The NYSID Library gratefully accepts gifts-in-kind of new or used printed materials on a limited basis. Librarians carefully assess all printed material donations based on their adherence to NYSID’s academic and curricular missions and in accordance with the Library’s Collection Development Policy.

If you are interested in making a donation, please send a completed Book Donation Form and a list of books you would like to donate (title and year of publication is sufficient) to the Library at libraryinfo(at)nysid.edu, or by mail at:

  • The Library will contact you about the status of your donation in a timely manner (normally within one week).
  • Please note that the Library cannot assign a value to donations but will acknowledge all gifts or donations from identified donors in the form of a letter, noting the total number of donated items.
  • All donations are accepted with the understanding that they become the Library’s property and as such may be donated, sold, or discarded at the Library’s discretion.
  • Proceeds of the sale of such volumes will be used to benefit the collections.
  • The donor is responsible for the delivery of book donations to the Library. Deliveries should be coordinated in advance for receipt during regular business hours. Unfortunately, NYSID employees are unable to pick up donations off campus.

Typically, the following materials are excluded from consideration:

  • Any books in poor physical condition, including: brittle paper; worn or broken bindings; missing or ripped pages; pen, highlighter or pencil marked pages; damage from water, mold, mildew or insects; or with a musty odor
  • Textbooks and handbooks
  • Periodicals, magazines, newspapers or journals
  • Scattered or single volumes of a multi-volume set
  • Pamphlets
  • Non-print materials: videotapes, DVDs, CDs or tape cassettes
  • Encyclopedias and dictionaries

Please contact the Library at 212-452-4169 should you have any questions about the book donation process.

For donations that fall outside of the Library’s collection scope, we recommend contacting Better World Books at 1-800-894-0242.

Thank you for your support of the NYSID Library.
