Writing a Paper: Books

Browsing the Collection

Finding Books in the Collection

After you've decided on a topic, search the library catalog ("BobCat") using keywords and phrases. NYSID, NYU, The New School, and Cooper Union all organize their library book collections by the Library of Congress call number system.  Call numbers are  how you find books in these libraries: they're the combination of letters and numbers printed on a label that is attached to a book's spine.

To the left is a list of useful call numbers to direct you to subject-specific sections of any of these library collections.

Consortium Libraries

NYSID is part of a consortium with Cooper Union, The New School, and NYU Bobst. This means that NYSID students are able to use these libraries' facilities and materials. If there is a book you would like from one of these libraries, you are encouraged to visit the library in person and check it out.

Unfortunately, NYSID cannot request the book be sent from another library here; however, any consortium book can be returned to the NYSID Library.

How to Find a Book

Search for books by title or keyword.   For example, below the search is for all books related to the architect Le Corbusier:

In the search results below, note that some books are Available, while some you need to Check Availability.  Take note of the call number (in this case, NA1053.J4 B47 1987), which is how you find the book on the shelf.  Finally, check the book's library location (in this case, the book is available at NYU, Cooper Union, and NYSID. The New School's copy is checked out).
