Thesis Preparation Guide: Citing Your Sources

Why Do I Need to Cite Sources?

It's important to make sure that give credit to the ideas of others and show that you are building upon their research. The best way to give credit is to cite an article or book in your writing. If ideas are not cited, this can constitute plagiarism.  

Citation Examples

BOOKS

Basic Format 

Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication.

Example

Gura, Judith. Abrams Guide to Period Styles for Interiors. New York: Abrams, 2005. Print.


MAGAZINE/PERIODICAL

Basic Format

Author. "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: Pages. Medium of publication.

Example

Rich, Sarah. "Oakland Made." Metropolis Jul. 2013: 60-65. Print.


ARTICLE from ONLINE DATABASE

Author.  "Title of Article." Title of the publication in italics all volume and issue numbers (Year of publication): Pages. Database accessed in italics. Medium accessed. Date accessed.

Citing Sources Guide

You may also want to check out the "Writing a Paper" and "Citation for a Presentation" guides on the Library's homepage for more information on citing sources. Just as in a research paper, it is important to provide proper credits to your sources, e.g., ideas, quotes, data, statistics, and images, in your presentations.
