Project Description
You have been hired to do the Interior Design for a Wounded Warrior and his/ her family. The Veteran has just returned from Iraq or Afghanistan. The family consists of a spouse or partner, and two children. The Warrior is confined to a wheelchair, and may have other disabilities that could include:
•Posttraumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD)
•Difficulty controlling internal temperature
•Eyesight limitations including possible light sensitivity
•Hearing loss either complete or partial
•Decreased muscular endurance
The Veteran had been very active in sports and fully participated in the Community before the disability occurred. Returning from Active duty, the Warrior and his family have had many adjustments to make to their “new normal”. The Veteran and his family not only have their physical and emotional disabilities to adapt to, but also changes to their family life and community involvement.
Your Clients are aware of the housing that has been designed for returning wounded veterans. Following input from veterans and their families, the” Wounded Warrior Home Project” at Fort Belvoir, VA was developed by the US Army/ Clark Realty Capital team. From the extensive data obtained, the research found homes of returning Wounded Warriors should include the following:
•In general, apply the Principles of Universal, Accessible and Visitable Design
•Specifically-Blend seamlessly into the surrounding environment
•Have Low entry thresholds
•Use linear floor plans
•Have Wide hallways
•Use Solid surface and contrasting flooring
•Have low windows
•Illuminated rocker panels
•Sliding interior automatic doors
•A trellised garden for quiet reflection
•Adjustable counter heights
