After using one of the library scanners, you will be prompted to send your scanned images to an email address. Once delivered, they can be downloaded at any of the library or Atelier computers. To print your files to the machine in the 2nd floor Atelier hallway:
- Check your downloads folder and open the file using Adobe Acrobat DC. If the application is not assigned by default, right click the file, select "open with," and choose "Adobe Acrobat DC" from the options. If it doesn't show up, you can also find it by typing the application name into the Windows search bar on the bottom left of your screen.
- Once your file is open, press [Ctrl + P] or File > Print to bring up a print preview. This will allow you to review any printing instructions.
- To print to the Atelier printer, select the topmost dropdown menu (labeled "Printer"). The device is named [CL-2FL-Atelier-A]. If for any reason your computer doesn't show this device, ask the library staff for assistance.
- To resize your scanned image, look for the section of the print preview labeled "Page Size & Handling" and select the subcategory "Size." Here you can decide whether you want to rescale your image. Selecting "Custom Scale" allows you to manually change these values, but please note that the "Actual Size" function in this preview only refers to the file itself, not the source material. Images can be resized in more detail by editing them in Adobe Photoshop (further instruction below). Make sure your image is scaled to be smaller than the size of the paper you're printing on. You can view these details on the righthand side of the preview.
- To scan and print a file that matches the actual source size, it is best to use the flatbead scanner. There you can scan an image and select "Actual Size" before sending the file to your email. After downloading, select "Actual Size" again in your print preview, it should now scale accurately.
- If you need to make changes to the size of the paper itself, select "Page Setup" on the bottom left of your print preview. The first dropdown menu (labeled "Size") includes several options to choose from. The Atelier printer is only stocked with Letter (8.5" x 11") and Tabloid (11" x 17") paper.
- Finally, click "Print" to send the job to the networked printer on the 2nd floor next to the Atelier.
If needed, you can also convert image files between several formats. Some of these formats are better suited to applications like Adobe Photoshop, which can be used to make more specific changes. The instructions below show how to convert files between JPEG, PDF, PNG, and TIFF formats, as well as ways to crop and precisely resize images using Photoshop:
- By default, images are scanned as PDFs. This format is most useful for Adobe Acrobat DC, but if you want to convert to JPEG, PNG, or TIFF, go into the application and select File > Export To > Image > [Your preferred format]. JPEG files are usually best for Photoshop. If you ever need to convert a file from another format to PDF, select "Print to PDF" in the print preview where you would normally choose a printer.
- To edit your scanned JPEG image before printing, type "Photoshop" into the Windows search bar and select the app "Adobe Photoshop 2021."
- Select File > Open > and browse the Downloads folder for your preferred file.
- When resizing an image, it is helpful to have rulers showing at the top and left of the Photoshop screen. They may appear automatically, but if not go to the “View” menu at the top of the screen and click on “Rulers.”
- This will make it easy to ensure everything fits on the printer page, but it also allows you to enlarge the image size by multiplying the image measurements (i.e., to double the scale of a 2” x 2” image, make it 4” x 4” instead).
- Very often, you will need to crop the image before adjusting the image size/scale. Use the “rectangular marquee” tool on the lefthand side panel to select the area you want to edit.
- Now go back to the Image menu and select “Crop”.
- And again to select “Image Size.”
- A new dialog box will pop up that allows you to change the size of the cropped image. Please keep in mind that the scanned image retains the size and scale of the original image/diagram (For example, if you want to enlarge the scale of your scanned image to 200%, multiply the current dimensions by 2). Check the "Constrain Proportions" box to make sure all dimensions will update proportionally.
- As before, make sure the image in your print preview is smaller than the paper. Click "print" to send the job to the networked printer on the 2nd floor next to the Atelier.
