Design Theory: Researching Theory

Theory

Theory comes from the Greek root theos, meaning "to see."

Here are a few things to consider when looking at different theories/theorists:

  • Historical context
    • When was this theory popular/conceived?
    • Where was this theory popular/conceived?
    • What was happening then?
    • Who was in power? Who wasn't?
  • Cultural context
    • What general philosophy/philosophies and attitudes were popular?
    • What were the norms of social status? Gender roles? Politics?
    • What were the major ethnic identities? Any stereotypes/predjudices to consider?
  • Psychology
    • How did people interact with their environment?
    • How did they interact with things?
    • What did they value most?
