Diversity and Inclusion--Resources and References: World Cultures & Ethnities

Scope Notes

The following lists of references and resources on diversity issues related to other cultures and minorities are not meant to be comprehensive nor exhaustive. The broad geographical classification below is just a guide for conducting your research. Under each broad regional group, you can further hone in on interior design, architecture, and aesthetics associated a specific culture, ethnic group, minority, and race by using boolean keyword searches, such as "Japan AND architects", "India AND interior design", or "Mexico AND interior design". Please also note that the concepts of culture, ethnicity, minority, and race are overlapping, but also different. While race tends to refer to groups of people sharing similar hereditary physical characteristics, ethnic background, or geographic roots, but "culture, on the other hand, is thoughts, customs, traditions, beliefs and values which define us" ("Race"; kam233). The former is not changeable, whereas the latter can be changed, e.g., Zaha Hadid was an Iraqi-born British architect; I.M. Pei was an Asian-American architect with a Chinese ethnic background; and Charles Allem is a South African-American interior designer with a Lebanese ethnic background. You can further research on individual interior designers or architects by using their names as search terms.
