Modified Library Hours and Services Due to COVID-19

Dear NYSID Community:

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have made additional service changes for the Summer Semester, June 7-July 29. The safety and health of our patrons and staff is our priority. Thank you for following guidelines and for your patience and flexibility as we move through this time together. (Please note that the Library’s modified hours and services are subject to change following guidelines and policies provided by the College, the New York State/New York City governments, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.)

Revised Library Hours from June 7 to July 29

As the current COVID situation in the US continues to improve, the Library has restored some onsite hours and services for the Summer Semester. Subject to the College’s Return to Campus policies, NYSID students and faculty are able to browse both the library and materials collections, borrow books and course reserve textbooks, and use the reading room, scanners and computer terminals in the Library without appointment. However, the maximum capacity of people in the Library is limited to 10 (including library staff). No group gathering is allowed, and mask requirement and social distancing protocols are strictly enforced. Hand sanitizer will be provided at service points throughout the Library. Access to the library is limited to NYSID students, faculty, and staff only.

*The Library will be completely closed without any onsite nor virtual services on June 18, July 5, and after 2 p.m. on June 11 and 25.

Print Collections

Books (Main Collection)

  • When the physical library is closed, some books may be eligible for “Hold Requests” via our Library online catalog, BobCat.
  • For more information on this service, please see our guide How to Put a Book on Hold at the NYSID Library.
  • Hold requests will be processed by limited onsite library staff. Requested books will be placed on the hold shelves behind the circulation desk or checked out as loans to your library account and placed in a designated book locker for pickup within 7 days. Accounts must be in good standing for this service.
  • Important – You will receive two emails about your request:
    1. A NYSID Library email informing you that your requested holds have been successfully checked out to your library account with locker retrieval details, such as locker location, number, and padlock combination.
    2. An automatic NYU email confirming your hold request (please ignore this automatic email as it will be superseded by the NYSID Library email with locker details.)
  • Items not picked up from the hold shelves and book lockers within 7 days will automatically be returned to the collection.
  • No NYU consortium borrowing and lending until further notice.

Course Reserves (Textbooks)

  • The Library resumes circulation of physical course reserve textbooks starting from the Summer Semester (normally available for two-hour loan). As the onsite library hours are limited, please plan accordingly when borrowing and returning course reserve materials.
  • For those course textbooks without electronic equivalent, the Library staff will accommodate scanning of book chapters/sections on a limited basis according to Fair Use guidelines and available staff resources. Please ask your course instructors to submit scanning requests using this form. (Proper MLA or APA citations for the requested book chapters preferred.)

Print Journals/Periodicals

  • Journals and periodicals will be browsable, but requests for scans of print articles can also be submitted to the Library by using this form. Please provide details of your scanning requests, preferably following the MLA or APA citation format, in the Details section of the form.

Returning Book

  • During our physical open hours, please return your books using the book drop opposite to the elevator.
  • When the Library is closed, all book returns must be made using the “NYSID Library Book Returns” bin located behind the lobby desk at the East 70th Street building. Items deposited there will be retrieved by library staff on mornings we are open. Note: There may be a significant delay in processing these returns on your library account due to limited onsite staff.

Library Reference and General Inquiries

  • All in-depth reference questions and other access-related inquiries will be handled remotely via our online chat service on the library website or by appointment using Zoom.

Library Instruction

  • Library instruction sessions will be conducted remotely using Zoom whenever possible.

Materials Libraries

  • Starting from the Summer Semester, library users are allowed to browse and use the materials collections at both the Main Campus and Graduate Center. However, materials samples may be limited as the library staff is gradually resuming our regular operations. Please also consult our Material Resources and Research Guide for alternative approaches to researching and sourcing materials during this time.

Please check back for any updates to the above services and guidelines and feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your cooperation,

The NYSID Library
