Modified Library Hours and Services Due to COVID-19

Dear NYSID Community:

We are happy to welcome you back to the NYSID Library!

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have made the following service changes for the Fall 2020 semester. The safety and health of our patrons and staff is our priority. Thank you for following guidelines and for your patience and flexibility as we move through this time together. (Please note that the Library’s modified hours and services are subject to change following guidelines and policies provided by the College, the New York State/New York City governments, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.)

Revised Library Hours for Fall 2020: September 8–December 21

** Please consult the Library homepage for any changes to our physical (on site) hours.**

 Visiting the Library

  • All visits to the Library will be by appointment only with the exception of book returns and pickups.
  • A face mask must be worn in the Library at all times.
  • A maximum of ten people (including Library staff) may occupy the Library at any one time.
  • Occupants must maintain a distance of six feet apart from one another.
  • Means of entering and exiting the Library will be kept separate to avoid two-way foot traffic.
  • Visitors will enter via the main door, but exit via the back-stairwell door (stairwell B). The elevator will not be in use unless an exception is needed. (Please contact the security desk at the East 70th Street entrance for assistance.)
  • The circulation desk will be staffed by one librarian and one library assistant only. A plexiglass partition has been installed for use during library transactions.
  • Hand sanitizer will be provided at service points throughout the Library.
  • Access to the library is limited to NYSID students, faculty, and staff only.

Online Reservation for Library Seating and Equipment

  • Reading/study tables: A maximum of three users (each at a designated table and seat) will be accommodated for one-hour reserved time slots. Surfaces will be sanitized by library staff between users.
  • Computer workstations: A maximum of two users may use designated public workstations for one-hour reserved time slots at any one time. Surfaces will be sanitized by library staff between users.
  • Scanners: A maximum of one user may reserve a scanner for increments of up to 30 minutes at a time. Surfaces will be sanitized by library staff between users.

Print Collections

Books (Main Collection)

  • To mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission, the Library’s print collection will not be browsable, but some books may be eligible for “Hold Requests” via our Library catalog BobCat.
  • For more information on this service, please see our guide How to Put a Book On Hold at the NYSID Library. 
  • Reminder: You will need to present your NYSID ID card to complete the checkout process at the time of pickup.
  • Books not picked up after seven days will be taken off the hold shelves.
  • In addition to reduced physical hours in the Fall, hold requests may be delayed for processing as a result of the 72-hour quarantine requirement for book returns. Please plan accordingly.
  • No NYU consortium borrowing and lending until further notice.

Course Reserves (Textbooks)

  • There will be no circulation of physical course reserve textbooks (normally available for two-hour loan) due to the need to quarantine printed material for a period of 72 hours after each use.
  • For those course textbooks with no electronic equivalent, the Library staff will accommodate scanning of book chapters/sections on a limited basis according to Fair Use guidelines and available staff resources. Please plan accordingly and provide details for your scanning requests using this form. (Proper MLA or APA citations for the requested book chapters preferred.)

Print Journals/Periodicals

  • Journals and periodicals will not be browsable, but requests for scans of print articles can be submitted to the Library by using this form. Please provide details of your scanning requests, preferably following the MLA or APA citation format, in the Details section of the form.

Returning Books

  • During our physical open hours, please return your books using the book drop opposite to the elevator.
  • When the Library is closed, you may return your books using the “NYSID Library Book Returns” bin located behind the lobby desk at the East 70th Street building. Items deposited there will be retrieved by library staff on mornings we are open. NOTE: There may be a significant delay in processing these returns on your library account due to our limited physical hours during this time. Please plan accordingly.

Library Reference and General Inquiries

  • All reference questions and other access-related inquiries will be handled remotely via our online chat service on the library website or by appointment using Zoom.

Library Instruction

  • Library instruction sessions will be conducted remotely using Zoom whenever possible.

Materials Libraries

  • To avoid the risk of COVID-19 transmission via frequent handling and touching of material samples, the materials libraries at both our Main Campus and Graduate Center will not be accessible for the Fall 2020 semester. Please consult our Material Resources and Research Guide for alternative approaches to researching and sourcing materials during this time.
