Modified Library Hours and Services Due to COVID-19

Dear NYSID Community:

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have made additional service changes for the 2021 Spring semester, January 19 to May 10. The safety and health of our patrons and staff is our priority. Thank you for following guidelines and for your patience and flexibility as we move through this time together. (Please note that the Library’s modified hours and services are subject to change following guidelines and policies provided by the College, the New York State/New York City governments, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.)

Revised Library Hours from January 19 to May 10**

Due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, the Library will not be maintaining any physical hours during the 2021 Spring semester. The Library will reassess the situation regularly, and may restore some onsite hours later this Spring. Please check the library homepage regularly for the latest physical and virtual hours. The Library will be completely closed without any onsite nor virtual services on the following dates: January 16-18, February 15, March 13-14, and April 3-4. During the Spring Recess, March 8-12, the Library’s virtual hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday only. Book hold requests via the Library’s online catalog, Bobcat, may be handled via contactless locker pickup based on limited onsite staff resources during the semester. Book returns will be made via the 70th Street lobby when the building is open. Please plan accordingly.

** Please consult the Library homepage for any changes to our hours. **

Print Collections

Books (Main Collection)

  • Although the Library is physically closed, some books may be eligible for “Hold Requests” via our Library online catalog, BobCat.
  • For more information on this service, please see our guide How to Put a Book on Hold at the NYSID Library.
  • During this period when the Library is physically closed, however, hold requests will be processed by limited onsite library staff. Requested books will be checked out as loans to your library account and placed in a designated book locker for pickup within 7 days. Accounts must be in good standing for this service.
  • Important – You will receive two emails about your request:
    1. A NYSID Library email informing you that your requested holds have been successfully checked out to your library account with locker retrieval details, such as locker location, number, and padlock combination.
    2. An automatic NYU email confirming your hold request (please ignore this automatic email as it will be superseded by the NYSID Library email with locker details.)
  • Items not picked up from book lockers within 7 days will automatically be returned to the collection.
  • Remember that book requests may be delayed for processing as a result of the 72-hour quarantine requirement for book returns and limited onsite staff. Please plan accordingly.
  • No NYU consortium borrowing and lending until further notice.

Course Reserves (Textbooks)

  • There will be no circulation of physical course reserve textbooks (normally available for two- hour loan) due to the need to quarantine printed material for a period of 72 hours after each use.
  • For those course textbooks with no electronic equivalent, the Library staff will accommodate scanning of book chapters/sections on a limited basis according to Fair Use guidelines and available staff resources. Please ask your course instructors to submit scanning requests using this form. (Proper MLA or APA citations for the requested book chapters preferred.)

Print Journals/Periodicals

  • Journals and periodicals will not be browsable, but requests for scans of print articles can be submitted to the Library by using this form. Please provide details of your scanning requests, preferably following the MLA or APA citation format, in the Details section of the form.

Returning Books

  • During this period when the Library is physically closed, all book returns must be made using the “NYSID Library Book Returns” bin located behind the lobby desk at the East 70th Street building. Items deposited there will be retrieved by library staff on mornings we are open. Note: There may be a significant delay in processing these returns on your library account due to book quarantining procedures and limited onsite staff.

Library Reference and General Inquiries

  • All reference questions and other access-related inquiries will be handled remotely via our online chat service on the library website or by appointment using Zoom.

Library Instruction

  • Library instruction sessions will be conducted remotely using Zoom whenever possible.

Materials Libraries

  • To avoid the risk of COVID-19 transmission via frequent handling and touching of material samples, the materials libraries at both our Main Campus and Graduate Center will not be accessible for the Fall 2020 semester. Please consult our Material Resources and Research Guide for alternative approaches to researching and sourcing materials during this time.

Please check back for any updates to the above services and guidelines and feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your cooperation,

The NYSID Library
